Drawing Galway 010 - The Crane Bar, Sea Road, Galway

Every year as part of their 31 Day Drawing Challenge, we "liaise" with the folks from the Galway Pub Scrawl to include an Urban Sketch Day! This year, we went down to the little courtyard space outside the Crane Bar, Sea Road, Galway, which can be found here:



There were quite a few brave souls out, even with the weather a bit changeable, but I didn't photograph everyone's pieces. I'll update here with more bits as people send them to me!

The weather has been atrocious here in Galway all summer, so we've been a bit too cautious to go out Urban Sketching, but we're going to do ou best to rectify that and get some done in what remains of the bright months! Keep an eye peeled for a gathering in August and September at least.

Drawing Galway 007 - The Spanish Arch, Galway.

More drawing out & about in Galway! The weather was absolutely fabulous at the Spanish Arch - I'd imagine that some of us must have gotten a small touch of sunburn. The environs of the Arch was super busy, with lots of people quizzing us about Urban Sketching, and how to find out more. I really have to remember to make a flier or handout to give away with our web address on it.























We'll be out again next month, who knows where! Well, Jay does, it'll be his chance to pick. :D Keep an eye on the blog.

Drawing Galway 006 - Mutton Island/Grattan Road

So we went out and about in Galway, but as can happen occasionally in our cold temperate climate, it was raining and grey when we got there. Like, the kind of rain that would dissolve sketchbooks. So we went up the road to the cafe attached to the Galway Aquarium ( The Atlantaquaria ) for tea, coffee and sketches. :) There was only a few of us in, and Margaret left her drawing supplies in the car, so here's the few bits and pieces we made!

A small update: Brianán was Urban Sketching on the same weekend - while at the Electric Picnic Music Festival! Obviously they had very different weather over in the East, here's her pic from the weekend:

Due to various circumstances, our next get-together, Drawing Galway 006, has been moved to Sunday the 31st of August instead of the 24th. Hope that doesn't affect all of your plans too much!

Drawing Galway 005 - The Canal Walk (behind Born in Galway)

Jay picked us a fantastic locale for our session of drawing Galway this week, and we got lucky with the weather! The Galway International Arts Festival 2014 is on, so the city is full of Art and life at the moment, putting us all in the mood for getting out and about and doing a bit of Urban Sketching. It also a makes the city full of distractions, and as it's also the month where plenty of people go on their holidays, so it was a smaller gathering than last time!

Galway is full of canals, and we have walks alongside most of them. They make great spots to sit in the Sun and have lunch, or better yet to sit and draw! Every angle from where we sat, you could see picturesque, interesting scenery all about. The only downside to where we were is that the foliage is in full bloom at the moment, so it was only glimpses of the Cathedral, the Arts Festival tent, St Nicholas's Church etc that we captured. Everything else was trees and flowers!

Drawing Galway 004 - Quay Street, Galway

We had a fantastic day for our group meet-up. Galway has been sweltering under the influence of our annual week of Summery weather, so we knew it would be warm. Luckily, the temperature dipped down to pleasant but not melting for Sunday, so we proceeded out to Quay Street for our meet-up.

We were mentioned in the Galway Advertiser in the previous month and Roisin delivered an excellent talk in Charlie Byrne's Bookshop, so we knew public interest was piqued, but I think the turn out was beyond our expectations! Jay arrived early and picked an excellent spot under the shade of some small trees just down from the Spanish Arch and we settled in for our drawing day.

You can spot any collection of Urban Sketchers by the folding stools!


In fact, I found several new people by spotting them wandering about with folding stools on their backs! We also got a wonderful reaction from passers-by, everyone was very friendly, with locals, children, tourists and Artists alike all enquiring what were we doing? Are we a group? Is it a class? I have a feeling more people will turn up to join us next time.
